imagesThe Toshiba Qosmio F45-AV411 notebook with a 15.4 inch LCD UltraBright display is a multi-media giant. I looked high and low for a notebook with the capacity to run HD graphics smoothly and accurately. The problem is most notebooks with advanced graphics capability are in the $1300 on up price range. The Toshiba Qosmio F45 has the Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo processor with an Intel GM965 chipset and 1 GB Intel Turbo Memory.

Toshiba did not stop there, it included advanced graphics technology with the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100. The super advanced optical drive is equipped with LabelFlash technology that is compatible with virtually all popular DVD/CD formats. Burning DVD/CDs has never been easier and better. These were the main features I was looking for and I was able to find a reconditioned Qosmio F45 on two reputable web sites for $649 and $749 respectively. The difference in price between the two sites is unexplainable. It is the same model.

Other Advanced Features:

  • Toshiba includes 802.11a/g/n LAN wireless connectivity. Also, included is an IEEE 1394 data port and Ethernet 10/100 card. The ability to connect up at a HOT SPOT, wireless home network or directly is a cinch. In less than 5-minutes I was able to connect the Toshiba Qosmio to my home wireless network. The built-in deluxe modem obviates the necessity of any external devices.
  • A huge improvement is the inclusion of Harman Kardon speakers and a complete Dolby Digital Sound 5.1 capacity. There isn’t a less than $2,000 laptop on the market with the pristine subwoofer and treble sounds found in the Toshiba Qosmio F45. Add some headphones and you are in a concert hall with exceptional acoustics.
  • Toshiba includes 2 GB RAM and a 200 GB hard drive. In addition, the model has an Express Card/Memory slot compatible with Memory Stick Pro, SD, MMC, xD Picture card and a 5-in-1 Bridge Media Adapter. As mentioned previously the advanced optical drive offers enormous capacity for running HD DVD/CD music, video and pictures.
  • The webcam with built-in microphones is a step above most notebook built-in webcams. The internal Graphics Accelerator and other advanced technology has forgiveness for people in motion. I have not had a blur-out or distorted image yet. It is a really fine webcam for keeping in touch with family and friends.
  • I was not a fan of Vista until now. The Toshiba Qosmio F45 comes installed with Windows Vista Ultimate. The OS takes a little getting used to. I will say, the big OS needs the likes of the Toshiba Qosmio F45 to run the platform. I personally think that has been one of the contributing factors in Vista’s bad wrap.
  • You wouldn’t ask Jeff Gordon to compete at the Daytona 500 with a 4-cylinder souped up Volkswagen. In fact, he would be barred from competing against the standard 8-cylinder field of competitors. The same is true of loading a big performer like Vista on a slow processor, a gig of RAM and little in the way of graphics technology. It sputters, drags and is a major disappointment. Not so, with the revved up Toshiba Qosmio F45.
  • I recommend the Toshiba Qosmio F45 AV411 to anyone with a need for high performance in a notebook.

  • For those in the market for a thin and light notebook model that features the well-liked Intel Core 2 Duo processor, has a gigantic hard disk and long lasting battery life, as well as an adequately sized keyboard and a decently viewable screen, all packed in a lightweight machine, the Toshiba Satellite U305-S2812 is perhaps the way to go.

At $1149, the Satellite U305-S2812 boasts of an impressive hardware profile for its price. Featuring a 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, generous 2GB of RAM, plenty of storage capacity with its 250GB hard disk, a 13.3″ widescreen display, a dual layer DVD writer and wireless draft-N connectivity. The only shortcoming, perhaps, is the lack of dedicated graphics card since U305-S2812 comes equipped with Intel GMA X3100. However, the X3100 is Intel’s most impressive integrated graphics solution so far and truly gives ATI and nVidia a run for their money in the integrated graphic chips market.

Within an exterior of solid plastic build, Toshiba has managed to launch U305-S2812 with unique design and usability elements that appeal to a wide range of audiences from small business executives to students. The lid is Onyx Blue Metallic that almost looks black unless you get the light reflected from the right angle. Latchless designs are getting popular and this particular model also relies on its hinge mechanism for opening and closing the lid.

The U305-S2812 comes with an average to above-average keyboard and touchpad. The almost full-size compact keyboard is good enough for typing with its well-spaced keys. Many would love the fact that the keyboard for this 13.3″ model has separate keys for page up and down functions, as well an almost double size Ctrl key sitting at the bottom-left corner for shortcut lovers.

Unfortunately, the keyboard does suffer from a bit of flex, and the experience with the distance with the fingerprint reader and the mouse buttons below the touchpad is not very pleasant. The touchpad itself is responsive but it has recessed edges that make it feel smaller than what it really is.

Toshiba Satellite U305-S2812 also earns some points for including dedicated media control buttons housed just above the keyboard and a separate button to launch your favorite browser. However it misses the now getting popular LED backlights on these dedicated buttons.

Toshiba equipped the Satellite U305-S2812’s with a 13.3″ glossy widescreen that pops images and videos off the screen with its above average brightness and contrast ratios. The screen enjoys Toshiba’s TruBrite technology but since it is of glossy nature, you may have some issues if a light source is right behind you.

For a notebook that is scaled at the lighter end of thin and light models, the Satellite U305-S2812 has an impressive number of ports attached to it. It has 3 USB ports, a FireWire port, a 5-in-1 multimedia card reader, an ExpressCard slot, VGA out and so on.

The performance, as expected from the hardware profile, is good enough for everyday tasks. However, it’s somewhat limited by Toshiba’s decision to equip Satellite U305-S2812 with an integrated Intel GMA X3100 graphics card. The graphics card shares memory from system’s RAM and hence doesn’t let the notebook perform as good as the models with dedicated graphics cards, even if entry-level.

The notebook also has an integrated 1.3 megapixel webcam and the audio performance is just average.

Satellite U305-S2812, except for the integrated fingerprint reader, doesn’t shine in terms of security features. This may deter the corporate minded executives from going for this laptop. Adding to this hindrance is the fact that mobile broadband is absent too, though Satellite U305-S5127 does come with wireless draft-N connectivity and bluetooth for small business executives or students.

Weighing 4.5 pounds, Satellite U305-S2812 is a thin and light notebook that is not very far from being a low budget ultraportable.

The battery life for Satellite U305-S2812 is excellent. The 6-cell default battery can give you anywhere from 2 to 3 and a half hours depending on your brightness settings and usage of processor as well as wireless connections. If you want to feel in heaven, spend a few extra bucks and get the 9-cell upgraded battery that will almost give you 4 to 5 hours of away from mains computing.

Unfortunately, the Satellite U305-S2812 includes lots of bloatware pre-installed on the machine that slows down the boot time remarkably. Users are advised to uninstall what they don’t need or plan to use of these free/trial programs (most of them basically, if not all) as soon as they get their notebook.

Overall, the Toshiba Satellite U305-S2812 is quite an excellent laptop in its class. Meant to be a portable lightweight machine that has enough power for performance and lasting battery lifetime, and that within a reasonable budget, it suits the professional and campus communities alike.

    Toshiba Satellite A355 Review :-
The A350 series notebook is the latest 16″ notebook from Toshiba and the successor to the 15.4” A305. This new model offers the same look and feel of its smaller brother as well as the same system configuration. In this review we take a look at the Intel configuration of the A355 and find out if it performs as well as its smaller brother.

    Toshiba Satellite A355-S6943 Specifications:-

    • Windows Vista Home Premium (SP1, 64-bit)
    • Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P7450 (2.13GHz, 3MB L2, 1066MHz FSB)

    Display :-

The 16” TruBrite display features a 16:9 ratio and has good color saturation and contrast thanks in part to the glossy polarizer layer. Compared to other notebooks this panel falls into the middle of the ground with average viewing angles. Vertical viewing angles are limited to a sweet spot that ranges about 15 degrees up or down before colors start to invert or wash out. Horizontal viewing angles are better, staying accurate at steep angles from both sides. Backlight levels are great for viewing in bright conditions, but aren’t bright enough for outdoor viewing.

    Build and Design :-

The A355 is nearly identical to the older A305 notebook, even sharing the same overall design and paint job. The plastics are glossy or even mirror-like over much of the notebook. The cover has a pinstripe metallic silver and chrome pattern, changing to a chrome and black pattern on the inside. The keyboard shares the same high gloss look with black paint and white lettering. The lower half of the chassis is standard plastic with a matte finish, with removable covers for each user-replaceable part.
The Toshiba A355 feels very durable through the use of good plastics and the scratch-resistant Fusion finish. Chassis flex is minimal if you are holding the notebook from a side corner. Screen protection is pretty good with only mild screen distortions when pressing on the back of the display cover. The glossy Fusion finish holds up well against day to day abrasions … which might include slipping it in and out of your backpack as you take it to class.

    Keyboard and Touchpad :-

The glossy keyboard is comfortable to type on, but not the easiest to read in bright rooms. The keyboard surface is firm with minimal flex under hard typing and individual key action is smooth with a mild click when pressed. The glossy surface reflects glare from overhead lights, which depending on the angle completely wash out the white lettering on each key. Smudges are another problem with the glossy surface which needs to be wiped down frequently to keep its clean fingerprint-free look.
Toshiba included an ALPS touchpad on the A355, which after some tweaking became very usable. Out of the box the cursor was very twitchy until I ramped up the sensitivity and lowered the speed. The touchpad surface is a matte overlay on the palmrest with the color scheme slightly showing through. The surface was easy to move across under most conditions, but the flush surface made it hard to stay within the boundaries. Scrolling took a while to get used to since I kept moving off of the touchpad surface.
The A355 also supports disabling the lights for the media keys and around the touchpad. This can help reduce all the distracting illumination “features” when watching a movie with the lights out.

    Ports and Features:-

Port selection on the A355 is great, with four USB ports, FireWire, eSATA through a USB combo port, S-Video, HDMI, VGA, LAN, and audio jacks. This notebook also features a 5-in-1 multicard reader, ExpressCard/54 slot, and a FM Tuner. In this day and age the S-Video port is somewhat of a mystery, but at least they didn’t take away something else to fit that on the side. The FM Tuner is great if you don’t want to be connected to the internet to listen to streaming music, but it does require a whip antenna attached to the side to function.

Full review of Toshiba Qosmio G45

With Blu-ray winning HD format war, Toshiba attempted to release an HD solution in the Qosmio G45 laptop. The laptop comes with a HD-DVD burner as well as a plethora of features to support a theater-like experience starting from the powerful speakers to the razor sharp 17-inch widescreen display Large and in charge, the Qosmio G45 comes with a black-piano finish lid that contrasts the white keyboard. Although the aesthetic design is quite impressive, picking up the laptop is quite impressive. The laptop weighs in at a massive 10 pounds, which will either break your back or enlarge your biceps.

    Features

The Toshiba Qosmio G45 comes with everything youd expect in a multimedia machine. HDMI-in and HDMI-out, ExpressCard slot, Memory Card slot Firewire, USB 2.0, audio ports (line-in, microphone, headphone, and S/P DIF out), LAN, S-Video, DVI, power and ports for infrared remote controls. It also comes with Bluetooth 2.0 and 802.11 a/g/n. Phew! The most distinctive feature is the vibrant 1080p 17-inch Widescreen display capable of 1920×1200 resolution. What does this mean? HD quality video. Powered by GeForce 8600M graphics card, it supports for HDCP (HDMI output) and integrated HDTV encoder for 1080i/1080p TV content. Of course, having great video won be a complete entertainment experience with great sound. Built with 4 Harman/kardon speakers coupled with 1 Bass Reflex sub-woofer, this surround sound setup produces great sound when watching movies or digital cable.

Whether you’ll be gaming or watching HD-DVD movies, the G45 performed effectively with only a few minor slowdowns, which didn deter from the overall movie experience. In everyday tasks, from word processing, surfing the internet and the photo-editing, the G45 will do everything pretty well, thanks in part to the abundant 3GB RAM, which is the only upgradeable component of this laptop. The battery performance when watching a movie was dismal – lasting only half of Batman Begins on HD-DVD. The battery depleted after 1:14 into the movie with full brightness and sound on. Be sure to keep a spare battery or be near an outlet when watching movies. Otherwise, the battery performance was around 2 hours under normal, everyday use. If you need a power laptop capable of HD entertainment, Photoshop, or gaming, this unit is for you. If you plan on traveling, you probably want to opt for another system as its mediocre battery life and weight is made for the desk (or living room) and no where else.
